Stainless Steel Chute & Hopper Systems

What are Stainless Steel Chutes and Hoppers?

Stainless steel chutes and hoppers collect, direct, and discharge dry powders and packaged products and bulk solids in a processing system. Hoppers can be used to hold and surge product and control the flow, while chutes are used to guide product in a vertical or inclined configuration.

Compared to carbon steel or plastic systems, stainless steel transfer systems have the best hygiene, structural integrity, and corrosion. They can undergo frequent washdowns and don’t rust or corrode. This helps to eliminate cross-contamination, safeguarding different product batches.

How Stainless Steel Chutes and Hoppers Work

  • Controlled Intake & Material Containment
Bulk solids and other raw materials can enter through a top inlet or customized receiving port. Continuous seals contain materials and prevent the escape of airborne particles.
  • Gravity Flow & Angle Optimization
Hoppers are designed with specific sidewall angles and smooth transitions to encourage the flow of material toward the discharge area and prevent compaction and bridging.
  • Metered Discharge Control
To control the flow and quantity of product being discharged, various options including manual or automated slide gates, rotary valves, and pneumatic dampers are available.
  • Seamless Downstream Feeding
Chutes interface with various downstream processes while ensuring perfect material flow with no retention or mechanical issues downstream.

Where Chutes and Hoppers Deliver the Most Value

  • Pharmaceutical & Nutraceutical Manufacturing
Chutes facilitate the compliant and convenient transfer of powders without cracks while ensuring complete containment of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).
  • Food & Beverage Processing
Chutes transfer bulk food ingredients of various forms (e.g. powders, grains, and spices) while ensuring food safety and construction integrity by being ready for routine washes.
  • Chemical & Cleanroom Facilities
Fine, reactive, and chemically aggressive powders are contained and transferred cleanly and completely without compromising the integrity of a Cleanroom.
  • Laboratory & Production Waste Disposal
High standards of contained sanitary waste handling are achieved by custom stainless steel disposal and garbage chutes.

Why Stainless Steel is Best for Chutes and Hoppers

  • Corrosion and Chemical Resistance
Stainless Steel’s inert and stable nature ensures its integrity after years of contact with harsh cleaners, high-humidity environments, and processing ingredients of a low pH.
  • Hygienic, Crevice-Free Surface
Stainless Steel’s smooth and non-porous surface aids in eliminating residuals of product and bacteria, and supports CIP (Clean-In-Place) procedures.
  • High Structural Impact Strength
Heavy gauge metal is impact resistant and will not be worn down from the transfer of even the most abrasive industrial materials.
  • Zero Product Contamination
Contamination from chipping paint and degraded equipment surfaces is a concern with non-stainless equipment, but with stainless equipment, that is of no concern.
  • Reduced Total Cost of Ownership
Over decades of service, the costs related to purchase, replacement and maintenance are significantly reduced due to the stainless steel structure remaining intact.

Custom Stainless Steel Chutes and Hoppers

  • Chutes and hoppers custom manufactured to ensure best fit within facility layouts and flows, considering all orientations and ceiling heights.
  • Chutes and hoppers can be manufactured using either 304 stainless steel or 316/316L stainless steel based on product chemistry and the cleaning procedures for the product.
  • Hoppers can be custom manufactured to desired capacities and wall thicknesses and custom-designed discharge throats.
  • Customization and integration options for slide gates, sanitary valves, dust collection ports, and weighing systems are available.

Hygiene, Strength, and High-Throughput Performance

Chutes and hoppers are designed considering the following:

  • Full-penetration, continuous welds along the seams, which are ground smooth to prevent catch-points.
  • Hoppers and chutes are designed with advanced geometries that ensure flow while preventing bridging and that provide structural integrity to support the mass of the product.
  • Chutes and hoppers can withstand the most rigorous cleaning and sanitizing procedures.

FAQ's

FAQ's

What defines a stainless steel chute vs. a hopper?

Chutes and hoppers are both vessels used to guide bulk solids or powders. Hoppers store the material and allow it to flow at a controlled rate, while chutes simply convey the material from one location to another by means of gravity or direct feed.

+ When would one specify 304 vs 316 stainless steel for chutes and hoppers?

304 stainless steel will suffice for most applications involving dry foods and typical industrial and food-grade applications. 316/316L stainless steels will be specified when enhanced corrosion resistance to food and industrial chemicals, which may be whol or partially wash-down, is required.

+ How do custom hopper angles help lower the chances of material bridging?

By designing smooth surfaces that have no crevices and have wall angles that are very steep, the friction of the material against the wall of the hopper is significantly decreased. This helps with friction flow because this design funnels flow to avoid the bridging of materials or the creation of “ratholes.”

+ Can the chutes and hoppers be fitted to the existing systems?

Certainly! We design custom inlets, outlets, flanges, and mounting frames that connect to the existing systems such as blenders, mixers, packaging systems, conveyors, and the openings in the floor.

+ Are there sanitary finishes available for pharmaceutical and cleanroom applications?

Certainly! We have a high-purity sanitary finish that provides mirror-polished surfaces of roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 µm, smooth and continuous welds and is designed for fast cleaning and cGMP compliance.

+ Are the chutes and hoppers custom built by Ability Fabricators?

Sure, all chutes and hoppers are custom designed and built in Concord, Ontario, based on the needs of the customers and the characteristics of the materials and the layout of the customers’ facilities.
