Hoods Function & Application Standards
What Are Stainless Steel Hoods?
Hoods are industrial ventilation, extraction, and containment enclosures that capture airborne dust, particulates, steam, heat, fumes, & vapors (including corrosive and non-corrosive). Hoods route these airborne substances through ductwork or filters and help keep industrial environments safe and compliant, as well as protect employees.
Standard sheet metal and residential hoods do not offer the same capabilities (or are simply not designed) for the same industrial and commercial applications. Custom industrial stainless steel hoods are built to withstand high/low thermal and chemical stresses and extreme sanitization and, unlike standard metal hoods, do not rust or pit or affect the air quality in a cleanroom.
Section 2: How Stainless Steel Hoods Work
- Source Capture & Vapor Containment
Hoods are placed directly above industrial equipment, wash stations, or product tipping zones to capture heat, dust, steam, chemicals, and other potential airborne workplace hazards.
- Airflow Balance & Draft
Designed geometry helps achieve an equal draw of air across the entire exhaust opening, thus maintaining a consistent pressure differential and minimizing potential contamination of the air in the work environment.
- HVAC & Ductwork Integration
Duct connectors and flanges interface directly with air handling units, exhaust fans, or air plenums for the seamless transfer of air.
- Protection & Facility Safety
By capturing hazardous emissions at their source, hoods help protect employees from hazardous breathing conditions and help prevent workplace condensation and enhance the aesthetics of the workplace.
Applications for Stainless Steel Hoods
- Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Manufacturing
Containment of dust and active ingredients helps to ensure cleanroom safety and cGMP standards.
- Food and Beverage Processing
Steam, heat, and vapor from washing and cooking are all effectively collected, while the surface remains clean and easy to maintain.
- Chemical and Cosmetics Processing
Chemical and vapor corrosion from compounding, blending, and batching are not an issue.
- Medical, Laboratory, and Commercial Applications
Ventilation for sterile environments, as well as kitchens and production facilities, is highly customizable and supplied across North America.
Benefits of Stainless Steel for Hoods
- Corrosion and Chemical Resistance
Retention of structural and visual integrity, even for prolonged exposure to steam, as well as chemically and vapor-laden cleaning, is not an issue.
- Hygienic, Crevice-Free Surface
A smooth, non-porous surface is easy to clean and prevents the growth of bacteria as well as the trapping of grease and chemically active residues.
- Thermal & Fire Resistance
The absence of warping, deterioration, or hazards of fire is assured, even for high temperature and extreme thermal cycling.
- Aesthetically Pleasing and Professional
A clean, modern look complements environments such as laboratories, cleanrooms, and the commercial sector.
- Total Cost of Ownership
A decades-long, durable construction lowers the indirect costs of repair and maintenance, as well as the costs of replacing equipment.
Custom Stainless Steel Hoods
- Customizations can adhere to almost any limitation in size and space (e.g., shape and the style of mounting, such as wall- or island-mounted or integrated with a machine).
- Selection of the stainless steel type (304 or 316/316L) can be used to match the severity of the chemical vapors and the cleaning required.
- Inlet ports, flanges, filter racks, and other ductwork integration features are all customizable.
- Surface finishes that fulfill cleaning and maintenance requirements while integrating aesthetic preferences within the facility.
Hygiene, Strength, and High-Performance Ventilation
Our hoods are designed with the challenges of processing floors in mind:
- Welds continuously, smoothly, and flush with surfaces to eliminate seams, sharp edges, and points where dirt may collect.
- Framing designed to withstand the continuous pressure of exhaust, the constant vibrations, and thermal expansion.
- Smooth internal transitions designed to align with ventilation principles to avoid turbulence.
- Designed to withstand vigorous cleaning, chemical sanitizing, and the highest standard of cleaning: steam.
